This Week in Citizen-Times History (March 18, 2025)

The March 20, 1986 edition of The Citizen-Times saw the announcement of the first Highland Games, which were held on May 30, May 31, and June 1 that year.

The author of the article cited that several Allen County and Scottsville residents have Scottish roots, which therefore made them eligible to join a clan, and “wear a particular tartan.”

About 24 clans, consisting of five to 10 participants, reserved space at Barren River State Park for the event, where it was held up until 2019, when the games had come to an end.

Additionally, the winners of the Mr. Easter Bunny and Tiny Easter Bunny competitions were announced in the high school auditorium, with the Mr. Easter Bunny competition including Brian Wade Baker, who was the first place winner, Aaron Michael Marr, the first runner-up, Wesley Garmon, the second runner-up, and David Isaac Gilman, the prior year’s winner.

The winners of the Tiny Easter Bunny competition included Daniel Talbott in first place, Jordan Isaac Creek as first runner-up, Raymond Michael Vaughn as second runner-up, and Aaron West as the previous year’s winner.

Additionally, the newspaper saw the announcement of the retirement of Chief of Police W.D. “Bill” Calvert on June 1 that year, who had served as chief for 11 years.

“I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve the citizens of Scottsville as their Chief of Police but feel it is time for me to move on to something else,” Calvert said on Wednesday, March 12 of that year.

The Citizen-Times, consolidated of The Citizen (1908) and Allen County Times (1890) on Oct. 10, 1918, has proudly served Scottsville and Allen County for 135 years.
