This Week in Citizen-Times History (April 15, 2025)

The April 15, 1993 edition of The Citizen-Times saw the announcement of several events that will be at the then-upcoming Jacksonian Festival of 1993.

It was estimated at the time that around 5,000 people would be in attendance at the three-day festival, with several activities like the Fiddlers and Bluegrass Jamboree having a cash prize of $3,000 over thirteen categories, competing with fiddles, banjos, guitars, harmonicas, and folk dancing.

Additionally, the event saw the 12th Annual Jacksonian 5K run, the Arts and Crafts Fair, the Jacksonian Quilt Show, the Jacksonian ’93 Golf Tournament, the Grandest Ole Opry, now the Scottsville Opry, the Bluegrass Auto Show, and the Jacksonian Beauty Pageant.

It was also announced that the Allen County War Memorial Hospital was going to be replaced by a new and improved facility, being valued at $9 million.

The Allen County Hospital Board of Commissioners agreed to transfer assets and liabilities of the hospital to Health Endowment Properties, Inc., the parent corporation of the Medical Center in Bowling Green, with them building the new facility where it is today.

The final draft of the contract was tendered and sent to the Allen County Fiscal Court for their April 19, 1993 meeting.

After a stint as a haunted attraction, and featuring in a ghost show, the War Memorial Hospital building was later renovated into the War Memorial Apartments in 2020.

The Citizen-Times, consolidated of The Citizen (1908) and Allen County Times (1890) on Oct. 10, 1918, has proudly served Scottsville and Allen County for 135 years.
