This Week in Citizen-Times History (May 13, 2025)

The May 17, 1990 edition of The Citizen-Times showcased the top eight seniors of the Class of 1990, out of a class total of 157 seniors, with the commencement ceremony being held on Friday, May 25 that year.

Those top eight seniors included Patrick Crowe as the valedictorian, with a GPA of 4.32, John David Cilburn as the salutatorian with a GPA of 4.24, Brad Turner with a GPA of 4.18, Darren Shipley with a GPA of 4.15, Derek Johnson with a GPA of 3.98, Keith Pearson with a GPA of 3.93, Laura Carver with a GPA of 3.91, and Joe B. Richey with a GPA of 3.91.

Additionally, it was announced that Charles W. Bethel was announced as the school district’s new superintendent, effective August 1 that year, replacing James E. Bazzell following his retirement.

Bethel had begun his education career in Hardin County Schools in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in the fall of 1963, having received his Bachelor of Science degree from Campbellsville College in 1963, his Master of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University in 1968.

It was also announced by the Southern Kentucky Community Action Agency that the US Department of Agriculture Service Commodities would distribute various food items to eligible Allen County residents at the VFW 5712 Post Home on Wednesday, May 23 that year from 9 a.m. to noon.

There was also a planned meeting on May 22 to discuss the community on the Maysville Road Water Project.

The Citizen-Times, consolidated of The Citizen (1908) and Allen County Times (1890) on Oct. 10, 1918, has proudly served Scottsville and Allen County for 135 years.
