This Week in Citizen-Times History (October 14, 2025)

The October 19, 1967 edition of The Citizen-Times saw the announcement that the City of Scottsville signed contracts for more than $40,000 worth of new equipment, including a new fire engine and bulldozer, the former of which gave Scottsville a fire department that is “second to none in the state,” being purchased from the Fire Equipment Service Company of Louisville, totaling $25,732.36.

The company stated that they would not promise delivery of the engine in less than 12 to 15 months, citing that the firefighters wanted the American engine, with there being no delay in getting the bulldozer, being purchased from the Kentucky Machinery Company of Louisville, totaling $14,317.

It was also announced that cheerleaders from Allen County High School were awarded with the “coveted winner’s trophy” at Western Kentucky University in their division.

Pictured with the trophy include, kneeling, left, Nelda Wade and Sherrill Elmore, the back row, from left, Peggy Parrish, Donna Pat Watts, and Beverly Tracy.

The school also announced that the senior class was preparing their class play for “The Death and Life of Larry Benson,” which was performed on November 3, being under the direction of Miss Carol Clinton.

Pictured cast members include in the front row, from left to right, Beverly Tracy, Donneta Frost, Nelda Wade, the student director, and Patricia Landers. The second row from left to right consists of Lon Whitlow, the male lead, and Teresa Blankenship. The third row consists of, from left to right, Kathenia Huntsman, Anna Marsh Taylor, William Gunter, Joe Costello, Mike Welch, Brenda Brown Clark, and Gary Williams.

It was also announced that then-Governor of California, Ronald Reagan, spoke at Freedom Hall in Louisville, helping to grow the state GOP treasury by $150,000 in a speech criticizing big government, welfarism, and anti-poverty programs.

Reagan spoke to around 13,000 people, speaking on behalf of Louie Nunn, the Republican candidate for Kentucky governor at the time, who would go on to win the election, becoming the first Republican governor in the state in 20 years.

A caravan of enthusiastic Allen Countians attended the event, having left Allen County in a motorcade with “Nunn for Governor” signs plastered on it.

The Citizen-Times, consolidated of The Citizen (1908) and Allen County Times (1890) on Oct. 10, 1918, has proudly served Scottsville and Allen County for 135 years.
