This Week in Citizen-Times History (November 3, 1988)

The November 3, 1988 edition of The Citizen-Times shared that the fifth annual 5K Run With Christ was held, where a total of 303 registered runner-walkers participated, amounting to $1,515 for the Allen County Ministerial Association.

Funds from the run were used for needy families in Scottsville and Allen County, with that year having the most runners at that point, with the first race being the one-mile fun run starting at 8 a.m., with David Frazier from Glasgow, Kentucky winning the race with a time of 5:52 minutes, being part of 59 runners in the race.

The second event, a one-mile fun walk for all ages, saw a total of 89 walkers, with David Buckman, from Lebanon, Kentucky, being the winner, with a record time of 9:03 minutes.

For the 5K run itself, a total of 118 runners participated, with the winner being Terry Reid of Glasgow, who set a new record time for his run with 16:21 minutes.

It was reported that the youngest participant was 2-year-old Troy Stinson from Scottsville, Kentucky, the oldest participants were the couple of Bob Batey, 83-years-old, and his wife, being 73-years-old, from Goodlettsville, Tennessee, and that Rebecca Sublett and her dog Ralph participating, with this being their second year.

With the then-upcoming election in mind, it was reported that a 60% voter turnout on election day was predicted by then-County Clerk Elvis Russell.

“I expect close to 5,000 people, maybe a little over, will go to the polls next Tuesday, November 8,” Russell said in an interview.

Since May that year, registered voters in Allen County increased to 8,489, consisting of 4,997 Republicans, 3,441 Democrats, and 78 with no party preference, being 61 more Republicans and 15 more Democrats, including 4,182 men and 4.307 women.

The Citizen-Times, consolidated of The Citizen (1908) and Allen County Times (1890) on Oct. 10, 1918, has proudly served Scottsville and Allen County for 135 years.
