This Week in Citizen-Times History (December 17, 1970)
The December 17, 1970 edition of The Citizen-Times saw the announcement that the Allen County Patriots won two games, each between Daviess County and Central City, and lost one game against the Bowling Green Purples.
Against Daviess County, the Patriots scored 65-58, with Danny Spurlock having scored 21 points and 20 rebounds on the previous Friday.
Under the coaching of Tom Long, the team would then win against Central City 85-74, showing a balanced attack with all five starters scoring in the double digits, with Danny Spurlock scoring 23 points, Kenny Stinson and Sam Foster each scoring 17 points, Barry Hickey scoring 15 points, and Ricky Carter scoring 11 points.
The Patriots would then lose against the Bowling Green Purples 94-69, with the Patriots questioning how Franklin-Simpson managed to beat the Purples by 29 points.
It was also reported that the Rotary Club held their annual Rotary Ann Banquet on Thursday night at the Jacksonian Hotel, being one of the biggest social events of the Christmas season,
Those pictured include Randolph Richards, the Rotary president, along with Mrs. Richards, meeting Rotarian Billy Hurt and Mrs. Hurt, and Mrs. Jimmy Simmons, Mrs. Frank Meador, and Mrs. Neal Coots.
It was also shared that hurried Christmas shopping could cause unhappiness for either the receiver or the purchaser, with the Kentucky Citizens Committee on Consumer Protection listing several suggestions to save money and “help avoid marring the joyful season by unpleasant experiences.”
The commission requested shoppers to buy at “reputable stores,” being those that will be around after December 25.
It was also shared that sewing machines and stereos were “major items” that were sold through such stores, citing how customers had lost payments and lay-away deposits when the dealer would skip town.
Additionally, the commission warned that even worse were the “street corner and back corner peddlers,” that would sell stolen items that would make a customer complicit in a crime, and to purchase from reputable organizations.
The Citizen-Times, consolidated of The Citizen (1908) and Allen County Times (1890) on Oct. 10, 1918, has proudly served Scottsville and Allen County for 135 years.
